The school district continues to employ strategies of the CDC. This includes the sanitation of all common spaces. The district use two sanitation machines to sanitize all classroom space including classroom, bathrooms. kitchen and cafeteria, offices and the gymnasiums. Because of these machines we can sanitize an entire building efficiently and effectively in about 1 hour. In addition to social distancing we are also encouraging washing and/or sanitizing hands on a regular basis throughout the school district.
As our effort to promote social distancing continues we have encouraged students to enter the common areas from multiple entrances. The major concern is accessibility to the cafeteria. It is our desire to put in a ramp to the cafeteria as another access point.
We continue to work on the academic performance by offering summer school and credit recovery. We have been success in our first year of this endeavor. We had 28 students in grade K-12 improve their academic performance during the summer of 2022. We plan on continuing this program for the next two summers 2023 and 2024.
The employment of a social worker for 2 days a week has been a great need for the social and emotional needs of our faculty, staff and students. We have seen marked improvement in social well being and academic effort as a result of our social worker. We conducted over 200 visits during the last school year. It is our intent to continue this 2 day program for an additional year. We feel between the work of our full time guidance counselor and our part time social worker that the needs of all are being met at this time.
The board of education continues to takes input on a monthly basis form all stake holders. The board takes input from our community, teachers union (Deland Weldon Teachers Association) parents, and students. It is out of these discussions that we employed the social worker mentioned earlier.
